A Methodological Framework for Evaluating the Functional Inductive Approach in Second Language Speaking Instruction

Abstract


Speaking instruction in second language acquisition (SLA) requires evaluation models capable of capturing the interaction between linguistic development, cognitive demands, learner engagement, and instructional conditions. However, existing approaches to evaluating communicative and inductive pedagogies often employ diverse research designs and measurement criteria, limiting comparability across studies. This article presents a methodological framework development study that proposes an integrated model for evaluating the Functional Inductive Approach (FIA) in second language speaking instruction. Rather than reporting empirical findings, the study develops a theoretically grounded framework consisting of task-design parameters, speaking performance measures, learner perception instruments, and reflective evaluation procedures.

The framework draws upon principles from Task-Based Language Teaching, Robinson’s Cognition Hypothesis, and willingness-to-communicate research to establish links between instructional design, cognitive demands, spoken performance, and learner participation. Effectiveness is operationalised through measures of fluency, accuracy, and complexity, complemented by perceptual and contextual indicators that capture the affective and interactional dimensions of speaking development. By integrating performance-based, perceptual, and observational data within a unified analytical structure, the framework offers a transparent and adaptable model for future empirical investigation.

It offers a replicable approach for researchers and teacher educators examining inductive speaking pedagogy across ESL and EFL contexts by clarifying how theoretical constructs can be translated into measurable research procedures. Although applicable across instructional settings, the framework is particularly relevant to structured second language speaking courses in formal educational contexts where communicative tasks, learner development, and instructional outcomes require systematic evaluation.
